As some of you may know, I recently ran a kickstarter to fund the print run of my Out of the Ashes painting. One of the backer levels involved an original painting of the backer's favorite mythological creature. It was supposed to be a 9 x 12 watercolor, but when the backer contacted me and said they wanted me to paint the phoenix constellation? I knew I had to do more.
With their blessing, I ran with it and researched just how the stars lay out and what went into this constellation. Apparently it is a source of many meteor showers, so while the white crystals with white glass beads are the actual constellation itself, the crystals with silver beads represent a meteor shower coming from the constellation. It is not perfect in the star placement, though I did my best to keep the basic shape of the constellation intact in the bird.
It was such a joy to work on, and really filled my days with light.
Watercolor, Colored pencils, Hematite ore, Silver enamel, Swarovski crystals, Czech glass beads.
